So What?
Explanation of the issue
Protecting children from exposure to lead is important because it can affect their health for their whole lives. There is no safe blood lead level in children. Even low levels of lead in blood have been shown to negatively affect a child’s intelligence, ability to pay attention, and how well they do in school. Lead poisoning in childhood can harm parts of the brain that control behavior, emotions, and decision-making. It has also been connected to aggression and criminal behavior, including violence, in young adults.
Children under six years old are more likely to get lead in their bodies because they are growing quickly, and their bodies can take in more lead if they touch it or put things in their mouths.
The most common way young children encounter lead is through dust that they swallow after placing their lead-contaminated hands or other objects in their mouths.
Immigrant and refugee children from countries with lower investment in physical and administrative infrastructure are at higher risk of elevated lead levels. This is due to less strict rules protecting children from lead exposure in their country of origin. All pregnant people should know the risk of lead in their bodies because it can pass to their baby during pregnancy or through breastfeeding.
